After sell-out album launches in Melbourne in late 2015, The SURFACE Project and Tom Barton/Diego Villalta have allied to bring their rock and electronic influenced brand of modern jazz to audiences across Australia with a double-bill tour. The Now will feature performances in Brisbane, Hobart, Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra.
The SURFACE Project have released their debut album Next – a collection of eight original compositions – showcasing their powerful and driving ensemble sound. These pieces feature the young musicians fearlessly exploring new sounds in contemporary jazz while drawing together diverse influences from experimental rock to Icelandic folk music.
In a four star review, All About Jazz reviewer Phil Barnes describes Connections variously as “vulnerable”, “desolate and “nightmarish, claustrophobic even….” Tom Barton and Diego Villalta have created a hauntingly beautiful sonic landscape that captures a sense of awareness and continuously surprises as the duo twists through eight stunning improvisations.
