JMI LIVE – ROB McWILLIAMS [VIDEO]

Jazz Music Institute (JMI) is a higher education provider based in Brisbane, Australia delivering accredited courses in music specialising in jazz performance. JMI also runs a jazz club on campus open to the public every Thursday and Friday night called JMI Live. The sessions have been streaming live from Facebook and YouTube, reaching a broader audience – and creating an amazing archive of performances.

The club may be closed, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, but the gigs are still going ahead online, every Thursday.

For those who wish to support this great initiative – and help musicians keep making a living – the Institute has set up a donation page on PayPal.

This week JMI Live featured Rob McWilliams.

Rob was born and raised in Melbourne and played professionally on the scene there in the late 70s and throughout the 80s including stints with fusion band McDonalds Farm and mainstream jazz groupWilbur Wildes Blowout.

Dr. McWilliams has also performed with a number of domestic and international symphonic and jazz ensembles including performances with the following jazz artists: Mickey Tucker, Bobby Shew, Pete Christlieb, Nat Adderley, Vincent Herring, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Eddie Daniels, Ed Shaughnessy, Andy Martin, Dale Barlow, Wilbur Wilde, and Paul Grabowsky. From 1991 to 2014 he was resident in the USA where he was a professor of music at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh directing ensembles and teaching courses in conducting, music education, and jazz. He relocated to Brisbane in 2015 where he now freelances as a musician, educator, and conductor as well as working for Yamaha Music Australia as their Education Outreach Clinician and as a sessional lecturer at the Jazz Music Institute.

In this concert, he was joined on stage by a stellar lineup of local Brisbane musicians put together to perform standards and some of Robs original compositions spanning the last few decades.

Enjoy.
