Anna Setton: ‘My music breathes the freedom and harmony of jazz’

Anna Setton is the little drop of dew sparkling on a little leaf, at 5.30 am in the morning; she is the sea breeze caressing your face at the beach when the sun sets; she is a tight hug, when you most needed. If you saw her stand-out performance at the Sydney International Women’s Jazz Festival, back in 2019, you know all this is true. Born and raised in São Paulo, she is now based in Lisbon, where she effectively holds the role of Brazilian music Ambassador, the sublime singer song-writer is back in Australia, showcasing her signature blend of jazz, bossa nova, and contemporary music. You might think that she’s here to promote her new album, O Future e Mais Bonito (the future is more beautiful), but her real mission is to spread love and joy.

What would you say to a total stranger to come to one of your gigs in Australia??

It will be a beautiful concert, with memorable and soulful moments, performed by a Brazilian jazz trio, with myself on guitar and vocals, Edu Sangirardi on piano and arrangements and Rogerio Pitomba on drums.  I will perform original songs and some beautiful Brazilian classics. I hope to reconnect with the warm audiences I met back in 2019,  incredibly sensitive and passionate about Brazilian music.

What has your journey in music been like?

It’s been a beautiful and deep adventure, filled with the dreamlike wonder and the beauty of making music.

The tour of my first album, when I traveled to Europe, Australia, and Japan, was definitely a highlight, not only because it was the first time I shared my music with international audiences, but also because I realized how music can truly connect us. It made me see that my songs could move and inspire people far beyond my own world, and that was deeply meaningful

Also this current moment, where I feel I’ve found my path again in music, and I’m truly excited to share my songs with people.

What has been the greatest challenge you’ve had to face?

Moving to a new country in 2021 and having to start over in a new market, the European one.

How did you discover your voice as an artist?

Practicing and searching. Questioning myself and making lots of mistakes. I hope I’ll always be in the process of discovering who I am.

What is the main message you want your music to convey?

Definitely sharing and spreading love.

Who are your heroes?

Tom Jobim, Ella Fitzgerald, Gal Costa, Joao Gilberto… and many others.

What is the secret of Brazilian music’s appeal?

The blend of rhythm, harmony, and joy.

Which Portuguese word should everyone know?

Saudade, because it’s an untranslatable word in English — one that expresses a feeling of memory, love, nostalgia, and longing all at once.

What makes the future “mais bonito”?

My daughter, and the beauty of the things I’ve yet to discover in music, in people, and in nature.

How ‘jazz’ is your music?

My music breathes the freedom and harmony of jazz. Jazz, to me, is freedom.

Which tune best describes your current state of mind?

A timeless classic by the great Gilberto Gil, ‘Andar com Fe Eu Vou’ — a song about trusting the path.
