Adrian Cunningham: some like jazz hot

When he takes out his flute to play ‘It ain’t necessarily so’, he turns it into a hard-grooving soul-jazz anthem and when he plays an actual 60s soul-jazz anthem, like ‘Mercy, Mercy, Mercy’, he does it with a free spirit and a post-bop sensitivity.

Is Adrian Cunningham Australia’s Finest Jazz Export?

A year before I moved, I visited NY to get a few lessons and to just soak up the scene. It’s funny, I can’t say I fell in love with the city as such, but I realised that I would never get to play at the level of those guys by living in Australia. So I organised a visa and took my chances!
