Artists include jazz legends Vince Jones, Peter Gaudion and Bob Sedergreen in one-off shows with some leading names joining their line-ups.

The jazz community is an ecosystem of musical, academic and industry people with the common goal of promoting and developing jazz across Australia. The Emerging Jazz Festival program includes workshops and masterclasses, performances and jams, panel discussions and research presentations, in a hope to bring a sense of discovery to audiences, support to musicians, and a little enlightenment to the sector.
Albert Dadon is very ambitious about Bird’s Basement, expressing the certainty that it will become “one of the best clubs in the world”.
“When we’re working on a piece I’ve written, I usually bring it in to the band and at that point I let go of it, and sit back and watch them tear it apart in often very unexpected ways. “
Christian Windfeld: “[our music] is real-time composing and the free-flow of ideas and emotions – an extremely democratic and very accessible music that will calibrate your ears and tune you into the sounds that constantly surround you”.
“These guys didn’t live to play music. They lived because they played music. Music literally kept them alive.”
There have been changes to the submission process for the 2016 Bell Awards. To be considered for submission in 2016 you must be a member of the Australian Jazz Academy or have a member of the Academy endorse your project.
The roster does real justice to the ‘international’ part of its title, as it features musicians from four continents: Europe, Africa, Asia and, of course, our own little corner of the world.
“I would describe it as heart music. There is much complexity in the harmonic and rhythmic structures, however the intention behind any compositional or arranging decision is first and foremost about evoking an emotional response for myself and in the process hopefully the listener. The music is visual and visceral, it’s about dancing and embracing the heavy groove of living.”
The festival, a “cornucopia of music from across centuries and continents”, taking place at the churches, wineries and intimate spaces of Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, opens on New Year’s Day.
